Claims evidence

What evidence should I submit with a VA disability claim?

The evidence needed depends on the type of VA disability claim, but the record generally needs enough competent information to support the facts VA must decide, such as the current disability, the relevant service event or exposure, and the relationship between them when required. VA's evidence guidance controls for the specific claim type.

Submit evidence that proves a required fact

More pages are not automatically better. Focus on records that are relevant to the issue VA must decide. Depending on the claim, that can include service treatment or personnel records, medical records, examination findings, and lay evidence describing observable events or symptoms.

VA may also obtain certain federal records or request an examination. Review VA's current evidence guidance for the type of claim you are filing.

Keep evidence organized by claimed issue

When several conditions are involved, organize records so it is clear which evidence relates to which claimed issue. VMC can help associate documents with conditions and claims, but an automated association is a proposal until you review and confirm it.

Do not manufacture a nexus or diagnosis

A Veteran statement can describe facts the person observed, but it should not be turned into a medical diagnosis or professional nexus opinion unless the author is qualified to make that opinion. Preserve the source, date, author, and context of every item you rely on.
